How Is HIV Transmitted?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: hi doctor,

Recently I had met a girl who I am not sure about her HIV status, she was having mensuration when I tried to put my penis in. There isn't any condom on but on a second thought I decide to stop the act and she gave me oral sex instead. I am quite sure my penis touches the blood from her periods. Is it possible for HIV to be transmitted this way ? My penis doesn't have any open wounds or cuts except for the urinal tract. Can HIV enter from the urinal tract when in contact with the menses blood? We didn't have any sex ever since but just frequent oral sex.

It has been 5months since the episode and I have been having worry ever since. Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Should get tested for HIV...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

The very first thing I always advise is to have protected sex. At least, you can have lower chances to get STDs or HIV.

Next, even if she gives oral sex to you, and if you do not use protective measures, you are still unprotected. Her mouth might be ulcerated or bleeding of any source (even a little) is enough to put you at risk to get HIV.

The contact of blood even though you did not have any cuts or open wounds in your penis, increases the chances to get infected.

Do not get panicked. I advise to get regular check ups for HIV and STDs.

If it has already passed 3 months after you had unprotected sex, you should test for HIV. If negative, you can repeat the test after 3 months again.
The routine testing aim to detect the antibodies. Usually the antibodies are made within 2 to 8 weeks after the infection.

You can use an at-home testing kit to identify if you are HIV positive.

There is another test, called "RNA tests" which can detect the virus itself within 10 days after the infection.

At the end, you should get tested for HIV and your partner should be tested too. Do not forget to use condoms even is she gives oral sex.

Hope it helped!

Brief Answer:
Blood, semen, vaginal fluids-main means of transm.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

Blood, vaginal fluids, semen are the main means of transmission. These are the body fluids where high concentration of virus is found.

If your partner is really infected with HIV, getting into contact with her menses and trying to put your penis inside (I believe you had contact with her vagina prior to second thought) increases the chances to get the virus through the external opening of the urethra.

These chances are less if your partner is not HIV positive. So, you can be both tested for HIV to get sure you do not have the virus.

Another mean is by unprotected oral sex. In rare cases, it is reported to get HIV through giving oral sex. Even if you might not get HIV from contracting her menstrual blood, giving oral sex increases the chances for getting the virus. That's why I insist to get tested.

Hope it answered to your question! Let me know if you need further clarifications. If not, kindly rate my answer while closing it!
Thank you!
