How Effective Is Nexplanon Birth Control System?

Question: My girlfriend got nexplanon birth control a week and a day ago and the doctor said to use another form of contraceptive for a week before the nexplanon was in her system fully effective. so we waited a week and one day before we had sex without a condom. We just wanted a second opinion if we are protected from pregnancy now just relying on the nexplanon.
