Question: My husband and I have a dry hacking, nonproductive cough for the past 4 days. No fever. A slight running nose. I suspect this to be viral in nature. But how do we stop the cough?

Brief Answer:
A short course of antitussive syrup will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am,

I can certainly understand your concern.

I have worked through your attached query in detail

Many of your symptoms point towards viral Infection if upper respiratory tract infection.

Many of the viral Infections subside by itself.

In case the cough is troubling, it's advisable to consider antitussive syrup for 1 week.

I generally prescribe syrup Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine and Dextromethorphan combination (eg. TusQ-Dx syrup) to my patients with such symptoms. Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to improve his symptoms.

In case if the symptoms don't improve in 72 hours, it's advisable to consider a chest x-ray and 2D echocardiogram to determine further course of action.

Please post your further queries if any
Thank you
