Question: While getting out of bed Thursday I experienced sudden shooting (and intense) pain in the middle of my lower back. I can't move. Is this a muscle thing? How long before it gets better? I'm pretty active at 66 including aerobics. My doctor prescribed (over the phone) 600 milligrams of ibprofun

Brief Answer:

Can be a muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:

A sudden shooting and intense pain in the back can be due to a muscle spasm or an acute disc prolapse.

This usually improves with rest, hot compress, topical diclofenac ointment and pain killers in 5-7 days.

In case the pain is severe and persistent then you can get oral muscle relaxants prescribed from your orthopedician after an examination.

Do increase your fluid intake and do back strengthening exercises after the acute pain subsides.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
