Question: I've had diarrhea with a lot of mucus and small amounts of blood for almost 3 weeks. At times I've had a low fever (99).tonight I have chills and feel ill in general. Last week I called my gastro dr. And he said to get on a regular regimen of Imodium AD. I've been taking the XXXXXXX daily dose and it doesn't stop the cramping and diarrhea for more than 3 hours and less if I eat.i originally thought it was the result of eating a lot of caramel popcorn, but I believe that passed some time ago. I just don't know what to do at this point.

Brief Answer:
Thoughts on this.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It is definitely time to go in to be evaluated. I am not sure why you have a gastroenterology doctor - do you have a history of gastrointestinal problems?

If you don't have a diagnosis that your doctor is treating, then it is time to be evaluated to see what is going on. Three weeks is long enough to see that it is not going away easily, and I am concerned also about the low grade fever.

Possibilities of what might be going on include an autoimmune problem of the gastrointestinal tract (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), a persistent infection (particularly if you have eaten out of the country), and diverticulitis.

You have been very patient, but now is the time to have this looked at.

If you can't get in to see your GI doctor quickly, then go to see your regular doctor, and if you can't get in there for awhile either, then go to an urgent care clinic to get some of the lab tests started.

Your doctor should do an exam and get an idea of where in your abdomen there is pain or discomfort. Lab tests I recommend include a CBC with differential which can give an indication of whether there is an infection, a complete metabolic/chemistry panel to include glucose, protein, liver enzymes, kidney indices. Imaging studies would be next. And stool cultures. Your doctor (the GI dr.) will probably want to do a colonoscopy at some point.

So please do go in to be seen tomorrow to start an evaluation on this. And no longer accept just treating with imodium at this point.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
That is good that you had the recent colonoscopy. But if 3 weeks have gone by and you have had some chills, fever and constitutional symptoms, at the very least you should get a CBC with differential and stool studies/cultures. So please do go in.

I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis and then had that overturnedand changed to IBS. I have been suffering for years with bad bowel habits as well as stomach cramps/pains/and bloating (gas). I have also gotten used to hearing my food/beverages digest after consumption and sometimes even when I do not eat I hear these uncomfortable yet familiar noises. During my colonoscopy I was told I have internal hemorrhoids as well as an ulcer. Majority of the timewhen I have a bowel movement I also see a light colored mucus substance. At timesI can use bathroom and continually just get clear or yellowish mucus instead ofactually going to the restroom. I have had episodes of bleeding light color blood for the past few years and have suffered from symptoms that range from migraines, extreme loss of weight and muscle pain sometimes so bad in my knee it is hard to walk or stand. Just yesterday I woke up and my arm was extremely sore and I honestly cannot explain the pain.something like a pulling sensation. This lasted for almost the entire day. I am just wondering if any of these signs sound familiar and what it could be. I am sure I have a lot of symptoms for IBS but I honestly think I may be battling something else. I was a size 12 and started losing weight until I got to a size 4. I got pregnant and shortly after having my child I begin to lose weight again, until I was down to a size 0 which I still am today. Something is not right and I am not sure what other avenues to turn too. Thank you in advance. I would also like to mention that for a while I was determined that I had celiac.I was tested (by blood) and told I did not have the trait to carry this disease.

I had diverticulitis again. It didnt seem to react the same way as the other times. Been taking antibiotics, but now I find out I have a bladder infection. I have been having heart palpitations since March. Even though they say they aren t too serious, they don t go away totally. Then, I worry and that makes them worse. I d feel ok if it wasn t my heart palpitations. I don t necessarily hurt. What could I do about these heart palpitations.

Hi, I have had chronic abdominal pain, lower right quadrant, for nearly 4 years now. I had diverticulitis and had 14-16" of my sigmoid colon removed. Shortly after that it was determined that my gall bladder was not functioning properly and was removed. The pain never went away. Since that time, the gall bladder removal I have craved chocolate like you wouldn't believe. I have had MRIs, CT Scans, endoscopy, colonoscopy and all the specialists can tell me is what I don't have. No one seems to care to find out what is causing it. I recently heard about Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. It seems possible. Would that condition cause my body to crave chocolate as a form of combat for the symptoms? I am a 43 year old male, I currently weigh about 210, up 20lbs since the surgeries.
