How Can Anxiety About Liver Damage Be Managed While On Medication?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: I suffer from health anxiety and have received reassurance for the particular fear, but then I thought of something related, and the doctor on the other site who reassured me is not online to answer a follow-up question. I worried that I that I took niacin over the upper limit and read in high doses it could cause liver damage. The UL is 35 mg. and for the last few years I took 38.5. I understand this is fine. Then I recalled that many, many years ago I took a separate B complex with the multi-vitamin which also had niacin/niacinamide and that even it the typical dose was 100 mg plus the smaller amount in the multi, this would not be a concern at all today. NOW, I just remembered that in October of 2016, I took for 20 months Niacin (As niacinamide and 8% inositol hexaniacinate (no flush niacin)) 108mg / 540%. I know I should not read so much on the Internet, but I was getting the impression that the No Flush niacin could be even more dangerous for the liver. One expert was explaining that this is only in very high doses like 2 or 3 grams/day. He reassured me that if I had any liver damage I would have known about it. I am fine (except for health anxiety). Can you reassure me that taking this No Flush niacin 108 mg in addition to the multi-vitamin with niacin was still safe and that I do not have to worry about this?

Brief Answer:
You need not worry about this!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This has been a long time and if there were any consequences, they would have been evident already. I will suggest that you don't get any worried. You are totally fine. Remember higher doses of niacin might be bale to cause liver problems but they are not said to cause that for sure. So though you might have consumed higher than recommended dosages at one point, that has not cause any harm to your liver.

I hope this helps reassures you. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

I meant to say I took the 108 mg for 2 months, 60 capsules, one a day, NOT 20 months.

Thank you, Dr. Ditah for answering. So, even with the 108 mg added to the small amount in a multivitamin, taken for 2 months last year, you can say that I would know if there were a problem. It would be evident to me, right?

I think I misunderstood, also, that it is the time release not the no flush that could be more dangerous.

I don't believe I took the slow release niacin, and if I did it was many years ago. Even if I did take this more dangerous form, would I still be in the clear now?

Brief Answer:
Even if it were the slow release Niacin, it is long over!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The time frame makes it altogether unlikely that you run any further risk. There is no need getting worried about this.

I wish you well.

Thank you. Another doctor assured me that "rest assured" it did no harm, and that I would have had by now prominent symptoms so I would have known it. Having health anxiety, his definite answer calmed me down. I hope you agree.

Unlikely still makes me anxious...
