How Can A Stiff Neck That Hurts More During Certain Movements Be Managed?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Sep 2023
Question: I have had a stiff neck for a few days which seemed to get considerably worse today. I continue to get these "hot" surges of pain when I move in certain ways. I have no other symptoms like a headache, fever, etc.... I am thinking it might be a pinched nerve, but trying to rule out meningitis. I exercise frequently (lifting weights, swimming, etc...) and am thinking I may have done something to trigger this, but wanting to ensure it's nothing more serious. I'm traveling, but looking for some input as to next steps for determining what is going on.

Brief Answer:
If you have no fever or headache, it is unlikely to be meningitis.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Pain while moving indicates skeletal origin, most likely sprained/pulled muscle.

It might as well be a pinched neck nerve.

You can apply hot compress to the sore muscles and see if it relieves pain. Apart from that you must rest, and take a muscle relaxant (Requires a prescription to buy). You can also take a over the counter pain medicine like Ibuprofen 400 mg thrice daily. Most importantly, you should consult a neurologist to rule out a pinched nerve.

If you develop any fever, headache, altered sensorium, blurring of vision or any other neurological symptoms, you must immediately go to a hospital.

I hope this helps you.

Wishing you speedy recovery.
