How Can I Get Rid Of Swelling And Redness Around The Mildly Arthritic Index Finger?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Mar 2024
Question: I have a mildly arthritic index finger, which suddenly and without injury swelled up and turned red. It's very sensitive to touch, and I have been using AsperCreme and IcyHot, but while they relieve the sensitivity (SOMEWHAT!), I don't know the cause or how to get rid of it. I have high blood pressure and my pharmacist says I need a prescription for a non-topical pain reliever, but I do not have a primary care provider and my cardiologist's nurse is unwilling to help. I was 82 last week and just need to regain the use of my finger! Help???

Brief Answer:
Possible Osteoarthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir

I can certainly understand your concern

I have worked through your attached query in detail

As per your symptoms the condition is referred to as Acute Monoarthrits.

Possibility of osteoarthritis, and/or gout is very high.

It's advisable to get an x ray of the involved joint (x ray hand AP AND LATERAL VIEWS).

Sometimes, arthrocentesis ( fluid removal from the swollen joint ) to establish Infection or Crystal deposition disorders.

Further specific management if any is largely based on test results.

Meanwhile I will prescribe medications to improve your symptoms.

I generally prescribe oral analgesics like ibuprofen and antibiotics like Augmentin to my patients with such symptoms.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe medications and tests to determine further course of action.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you
