Question: My husband has had horrible cough and congestion for 3 days- 16 year old daughter started feeling congested today - she is leaving for 14 day school trip to China in 4 days - is it a good idea to give her tamiflu pack I have on hand? Or should I try Z-pac I also have ? I can’t have her travel to china and get sick!

Brief Answer:
Better to give Tamiflu and z pac both.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

By your history and description, possibility of viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) (flu) is more likely.
Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is anti influenza drug and hence should be started in her case.
Z pac is having azithromycin. Azithromycin is active against atypical bacteria. So this will also give benefit in preventing secondary bacterial infection.
So in my opinion, you should give her both, Tamiflu and Z pac.
Along with these drugs, warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day will also be helpful.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your daughter. Thanks.
