How Accurate Is Oraquick Test To Check For HIV?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I had 2 protected sexual encounters 2 years ago and after finally getting my nerves up I took an Oraquick test and it came back negative. I was fine until I stsrted reading and started hearin they had a few false negatives. Others sites say my test is 100% conclusive especially after 2 years. Do you agree?!

Brief Answer:
Did you have any other tests besides the oraquick test?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

There are few details missing and I would appreciate if you can provide those details.
Since the exposure was 2 years ago, did you undergo any HIV tests besides the oraquick test? When was this oraquick test done.

Each test has its sensitivity - means the ability of the test to detect true positive. Oraquick test has sensitivity of 90 to 95 %. So in 5 to 10 % cases won't detect HIV.

So in my opinion if this was the only test performed, you should test for second antibody testing for HIV. There are very less possibility of HIV in you but can be confirmed with second test.

I will be happy to answer your further concern, you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun.
Thank you.

That was the only test done. I have asked nunerous people in forums and have all said that the test should be 99.3 conclusive if tsken after 3 nonths and i took it after 2 years. I was also told that since i used protection thet i didnt need a test in the first pkace

Brief Answer:
I would opt for a 2nd test.

Detailed Answer:
Hi thank you for asking query.

I agree over the answer given by the other people that the test is conclusive after three months. As you have tested your self after two years it is also conclusive.

But in case of anal sex, if the partner was unknown (who's HIV status is unknown), I suggest my patients to undergo one of the 3rd or 4th generation HIV tests for more accurate results. There is no harm in taking second test done. It is just firms the statement of your first test results.

Kindly come up with the more queries.

Thank you,
Dr Arun Tank.
