Is There Any Medicine Or Spray For Children That Help In Easing The Pain After Administrating Anti-rabies Vaccination?

Question: Hi,
My 3 years old son was scratched by a cat 20 days ago. I started administrating anti-rabies vaccination on him. On 26 XXXXXXX he completed his 4th dose. But, last night, at the sight of injection (thigh), he started having pain. Till 8 am today, he wasn't able to stand properly and was limping. Last night, he had a slight fever, too.
Are these side effects of the vaccine? Please advice. Also, is there any medicine or spray for children that help in easing the pain?

Brief Answer:
Apply ice

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It is possible that an abscess has developed at the injection site. Such a complication can sometimes occur when intramuscular injections are given. Apply ice at the site and I hope that it would help. I do not think that any spray would be useful. If the problem does not resolve with ice you would need to get him evaluated by a doctor, preferably a surgeon.

Feel free to write back.

There isn't any swelling or redness on the site of the injection. It is just plain pain and it started 48 hours after getting the injection. He didn't have any pain in his first 3 dosages.

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Possibly not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the update. I would still insist you to apply hot and cold compress and see if it helps. If there is no redness or swelling I doubt if there is any cause for concern. You can feel free to give acetaminophen or paracetamol to bring down the pain. Wait and watch.
