Hi. I Am A 63 Yr Old Male In Good

Question: Hi. I am a 63 yr old male in good health for the most part. I have had an annoying pain in my left buttocks area for the past 7 weeks. It is most prevalent when I'm either laying down or sitting with my legs outstretched. The pain exists primarily in the buttocks area but goes down the left leg to about the upper knee area at times. At times, the pain is throbbing while I sit, whether the legs are straight out or bent. It doesn't particularly bother me when I'm walking. I'm wondering if this is a pulled muscle/strain or something more serious and what, if anything, I should be doing to heal this. Over the holidays, I took part in dodgeball and jumping at the Fun Zone with my grandkids which has trampolines throughout the area. I'm concerned about making it worse by doing something I shouldn't, but also want to get rid of the pain. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Probably sciatica pain, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to sciatica pain.

Sciatica pain refers to pain from irritation of one of the spinal nerves in your lower back.

I recommend using anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three tablets a day.

If the pain continues corticosteroids can be used.

They are prescribed medication, so you should consult your doctor before using it.

Physical therapy is also a treatment option for sciatica pain.

I also recommend using cool compresses for relief.

I suggest to avoid physical activities that can trigger the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
