Question: Hi Dr. Rynne:

I have a rash on my arm for almost a week. I am not sure if it is poison ivy or some other type of rash. It's red and itchy, but doesn't seem to be spreading. I have tried poison ivy ointment, bendryl gel and Cortisone cream, but nothing seems to be helping.

Brief Answer:
Look like an allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The rash seems like allergic in origin. Could be due to contact with allergic substances or might be due to insect bite.

No need to worry and it can be cured with supportive measures.
Take wysolone (prednisone) for trusting three days along with antihistamines like cetirizine or atarax. Apply steroid containing ointments like betamethasone topical cream also, Generally the lesion will resolve in a couple of days. If persist consult a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
