Is It Safe To Consume High Dosage Of Folic Acid While Trying To Get My Body Ready For Pregnancy?

Question: Hi Dr. Kushboo,
We are planning to start a family after 2 months. I just got a Rubella MMR vaccine this week. I have been adviced to start trying to conceive after 2 months of vaccine. Meanwhile after getting blood tests done for Haemoglobin, Vitamin D and Vitamin B12, I have been prescribed the following tablets -
1) Fol123
2) Becozules z
3) Orofer XT

I have also been advised Vitamin b12 injections (once a week for 4 weeks) and Vitamin D tonic once a week for 2 months.

My query is I looked at the composition of the above three tablets and the total Folic acid content is 7.6mg (5mg + 1.5mg + 1.1mg which is the content of folic acid in each tablet above respectively).

Is it safe to consume this high dosage of folic acid while trying to get my body ready for pregnancy? I have heard the maximum recommended folic acid dosage is 5mg. Are all these tablets safe for pre-conception health? Please request you to help me out with your advice. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Tablets are safe.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your queries. Regarding the folic acid dosage, it os a water soluble vitamin, so any excessive dose will be excreted in the urine. So, it os not harmful. But I think you can take a plain iron tablet without folic acid content. Ask your doctor regarding this.

Vitamin D is generally given weekly if it is low as it also helps in conceiving. Vitamin b12 injection is given in anemia as it can be one of the reasons of low hemoglobin. So, if you have anemia, these medicines will help you.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any other query, I will be happy to help.
