How Do I Know If I Need Calcium Supplements To Avoid Osteoporosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 26 Sep 2023
Question: Hi Dr Ditah,
I am 67 years old male in good general health. I get annual physicals with MD VIP. One blood test is calcium total. My readings are just very slightly below the middle of the range . Does this mean that I am getting enough calcium in my diet, I dont have to take calcium supplements, and I should not get osteoporosis. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Upload the report for review!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

The amount of calcium in blood is definitely affected by the albumin level. I will like that you upload the full report to me as an attachment. This way, I will review the values, taking into account the blood protein levels and make recommendations based on that. The decision on whether you need supplements or not getting enough in your diet and the ultimate risk of osteoporosis would be addressed as soon as we review these.

Brief Answer:
Your calceported calcium of 9.5 is normal!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed your attached report dated 08/29/2017. The reported calcium is 9.5 and this is normal. There is nothing to comment further about this. Take a look and let me know if you were maybe referring to another parameter and not calcium.

Thanks and let me know if this is a misread from your part.

Hi Dr Ditoh,

I know the reported calcium level of 9.5 is normal. My questions are

1) Does this mean I am getting enough calcium in my diet?

2) I will not get Osteoporosis?

3) I do not need to take calcium supplement?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
I now get you. See below.

Detailed Answer:
HI,

Your question is now very clear to be addressed fully.

1/3. Yes, you have enough calcium in your diet and there is no need for a calcium supplement unless you are already on supplements.

2. Your risk for osteoporosis is reduced compared to many others who do not have normal calcium levels. To further reduce your risk, continue staying physically fit and exercise as much as possible.

I hope this helps. If you have any further worries, let me know.
