Question: Hi Doctor,
My wife is 39.2 weeks. Yesterday, we almost thought it was active labor. But then they are slowed down. So we came back home. Today she is having contracting after every 20 mins for like 30 to 40 seconds. She is doing good and active. but sleeping excessively.

Regards,
Sateeshu.

Brief Answer:
Detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

In the current scenario, you need to observe the following things:

1. Vaginal discharge which is profuse, watery with or without some spotting.

2. Increased frequency of bladder/bowel activity. Sometimes, there can be retention of urine if the head is pressing down.

3. Decreased fetal movements as the head gets fixed.

4. Pain along the inner side of thighs, pelvis and the back.

If any of these is noted, please see your consultant as soon as possible since the duration of the contractions as mentioned seems effective. Please maintain adequate hydration.

Hope you find this information useful. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.

Yesterday we have observed all the above symptoms and went to hospital. They have performed NIA and everything looks normal. They have advised us to come back when contractions are for every 10 mins and longer.

My main concern is, she is sleeping a lot. She sleeps, when contraction comes she wakes up and then again goes back to good sleep.

Brief Answer:
Please check fetal movement. Look for any discharge/draining.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Please check if she is dehydrated or exhausted due to the contractions. Also, find out about fetal movement, and note if there is anything significant. If the contractions increase in intensity, please inform your doctor. Check out if she is alert while she wakes up. Give liquids to avoid dehydration. Ask her if she has any chest discomfort, dizziness etc. If so, inform your doctor.

I presume she is going to go into active labor in a day or two considering the symptoms you have mentioned.

Hope this helps. Please get back if you need anything else.

regards,
Shanti.V.

HI Doctor,

My wife is going through irregular contractions from almost 3 days, we went to hospital twice so far thinking its almost active labor, but both times we were sent back. Today contractions too total irregular, baby fetal kick count is fine, we observed 6 to 9 kicks in an hour after lunch. Other than that pain, she is doing fine. She is positive to do normal labor but her mother is filling her with negative thoughts and asking her to go for c-section, I understand that as a mother she is unable to see her daughter going through pains from almost 3 days.

We are anxious and tensed, what to do ? Please advice ?

Brief Answer:
Fatigue is the most common reason for the sleep.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing again.

It is common to go into false labor before actual labor or true labor sets in, especially in the first pregnancy. Do not worry. If the mother and baby are doing well, you can wait for a week after the due date. Meanwhile, please be in touch with your doctor.

Excessive sleep is most likely due to the fatigue caused by the contractions, the heavier abdomen and the need to empty the bladder often. If there is no snoring or sleep apnoea, there is no need to worry.

Hope this helps.

Brief Answer:
Possible due to the enlarged abdomen. Can be evaluated after delivery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Snoring and sleep apnoea can be seen when there is hypertension or diabetes during pregnancy but the most common reason is the enlarged abdomen. The cause can be properly evaluated after delivery. Monitor the well being of the baby.

Hope this helps. Please get back if you need anything else.
