Question: Hello doctor,

My son is 1 yr 8 months now. Since couple of days now he is scratching his head incessantly. There is no single place where he is scratching but it is all over his head. I have inspected but visually it appears normal to me. Even in sleep he wakes up and scratches his hear.

Kindly advise what needs to be done here, is it worrying? Should we visit a doctor for physical examination?

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Check for lice etc

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It seems to be lice infestation. Kindly look carefully for any lice. Lice can easily be treated with Overnight application of Lindane lotion over head only and cover with a cap to avoid child touching it. Or it can be treated with anti-lice lotions that contain permethrin etc.

If lice is not found, then its probably dry or irritated skin. Check for any shampoos or oils that maybe allergic or contains medicines. In such a case, the product has to be avoided. If its some medicated oil, then it needs to be washed out. Also check for contaminated water. Dry skin can be managed with coconut oil application.

He can be given syrup cetrizine in recommended doses to avoid scratching. Try above for 2 days. If it doesnt work, then an examination by skin doctor is needed.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
