Question: Hello doctor,

I suffered from cold about a month ago, which caused cough. Now cold symptoms are mostly okay but cough starts as soon as there is temperature difference or there is cold air. At this time when cough starts, there is lot of phlegm in the throat due to which my voice is impacted, also I feel lot of pressure/heaviness in the chest.
I have been taking ayurvedic medicine-Hamdard Joshina for cough, with which I used to feel relief earlier but not this time.
Please advise what may be the problem and suggest a suitable medicine.

Regards,
Bhawna

Brief Answer:
Possibility of bronchitis is more likely.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.

By your history and description, possibility of post infectious bronchitis is more likely.
Bronchitis (inflammation of airways) is common after viral upper respiratory tract infection like cold.
So in my opinion, you should do following things.
1. Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated.
2. Do warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day.
3. Start inhaled bronchodilators (formoterol or salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone).
4. Avoid oily and spicy food. Avoid hard to chew food.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these in 1-2 weeks.
Please let me know if you have fever or you smoke.

I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

They are inhaled drugs.

Thanks for your follow up question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
3rd point is about inhaled drugs.
You should start formoterol and budesonide combination in inhaler form.
It's good that you don't smoke and don't have fever.
Inhaled drugs are best for bronchitis.
Please let me know where do you live so I can tell you brand names of inhaler.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No, inhalers are not habit forming.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
No, inhalers are not habit forming.
Inhaled medicines go directly in the lungs. So no systemic side effects.
And they are very safe for long term use.
For you, start budamate or budetrol or foracort or fomtide inhaler.
You can buy either of these as all are same with different brands.
You should take 200micrograms twice daily.
Take for 15 days.
Do let me know your weight so that I can suggest appropriate dose.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
