Question: Hello I?m a teenager and one side of my face is smaller than the other I know people have facial asymmetrys but mine seems to be a lot worse then anyone I?ve ever seen. One of my eyes is pushed in and my jaw is significantly smaller than the other if there was a way to sen a picture I would but it looks unnatural. I would like to know what kind of surgeries/ exercises would help me look better and help the structure of my face

Hi, yes I’m his mother he is 16 years old I let him ask the questions I thought it would be better but he hasn’t been talking about his facial asymmetrys until recently but im certain it’s really bothering him. He says it looks like a whole side of his face is droppy and has much less muscle than the other side. I have noticed it too, he doesn’t have arthritis but he says he has had neck pains for a long time don’t know If that has anything to do with it, sorry if this is a bit brief but thank you for helping us and if you need I can send more pics and answer more questions if need be

Brief Answer:
More photos and information please

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
There is a definite asymmetry, the right one looks to be smaller than the left side.
Some more questions please:
Was there any history of accident, fall on face, direct or indirect trauma in past?
Since when this change has been noticed?
Are the movements of eyelids same on both sides?
Does he feel any weakness on right side?

Please send more photos with less brightness.
Open mouth photos.
Side photos from both sides.
Eyes closed tightly photo.
Cheek-blowing photos (with close lips to see whether the blowing of cheeks is same or not.
Any X-rays/CT/ 3-D or 4-D CT photos?
Any other information please.

Awaiting

I just tried sending photos he took from home because I’m at work it says error, hopefully they send we did get an x ray a bit ago of his face for his teeth although the doctor never commented on it, sorry. He does say there is muscle weakness on his right side and his asymmetrys have always been there just not noticeable. I asked him about facial traumas but he can’t recall any happening also if you can’t fully determine what the issue is what type of doctor would be best for us, thank you

Brief Answer:
As discussed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your additional information and properly snapped photos.
This is a condition called Hypoplasia of one side of face.
It is mainly less growth of bone and thus weakness of the muscles emerging or exiting from.
The forceful eye close looks normal hence facial paresis may not there.
Further studies needed are:
CT scan of the face and skull with 3-D rendering to know the development of bony structures. Additional electromyography, nerve conduction studies.
These will decide the cause and the possible corrective surgeries, physiotherapy.
He is in growing stage - 16 years.
It would be better to consult a Specialist who evaluates and treats/operates on such cases.
Your Local Doctor would know best Specialist dealing in such cases in your area.
It may be Pediatric Orthodontist/ Facial reconstruction surgeon/Plastic Surgeon.

I hope this answer helps you further.
Please give feedback.
