Question: Hello, Dr. Rynne-
I am interested in finding out if there is a health concern for my daughter's 14-yr old (female) friend. She tells me she has been coughing the last 3 months and periodically vomits into her mouth. She sounds like she has a chronic cold. She says she is not weak, but just feels like she has a cold she can't kick.
Any thoughts?
Thank you! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Could be bronchitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
I understand that your friends daughter has chronic cough. This needs to be evaluated.
Usually cough lasting for 3 months could be due to many causes, common among them are allergic bronchitis and gastroesphageal reflux, esp with the history of vomiting.
I suggest her to visit nearby health center and get basic evaluation including chest x-ray.
I usually prescribe antiallergics like monteleukast for such patients in my clinic.
Also a trial of proton pump inhibitors may also be given after evaluation.
Regards
Dr Arun
