Hello - I Know That You Are Endorinalogist - And

i have question about your article
The treatment outcomes were further classified as successful (cured and completed treatment), or unsuccessful (died, failed treatment, loss to follow up, changed diagnosis, ongoing treatment and treatment interrupted).
In multivariable analysis, a TB patient with DM has 3.5 higher odds to develop unsuccessful treatment outcome compared to TB patients without DM
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/#!po=45.3125
I studied it - about diabetes and TB treatment outcome - if i look on table 4
I did not find any huge difference less number with Diabetes completed treatment, and failed treatment more diabetes group
But looking one other numbers - diabetes had fewer %
If in article said
In multivariable analysis, a TB patient with DM has 3.5 higher odds to develop unsuccessful treatment outcome compared to TB patients without DM
How can you get such mummer difference that DM have less successful treatment outcome ? -
i can not understand
Please can you give me small comment
Thank you very much
Diabetes in a risc factor for poor outcomes in tuberculosis treatement.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for asking and apologies for the delayed response.
I read the malaysian article regarding the "Effect of Diabetes on Tuberculosis Treatment Outcomes" and i have gone through the details of table 4 and 5.
In table 4 ,(third row)i see that among TB patients with concomitant Diabetes only 20,6% completed the cycle of 6month treatement with antiTB drugs. In TB without Diabetes this result is 33.4% with a risk of mistake near zero. This means that The number of TB patients who failed treatment was higher in Diabetes Mellitus (DM)patient compared to patients without DM.
About "Failed treatement" characteristic, i see that -0,4% are (TB with DM) and 0.06% are( TB patients without DM )fail the anti TB treaement. The percentage of patients with failed treatements is higher in diabetics in comparison with non diabetics.
Anyway i want to say that it is true that there are not huge differences between the numbers of Diabetes and non-Diabetes and in many characteristics (like successful treatement,Cured TB or even fatality) where i see better results for diabetic patients.
To conclude my comment ,i want to underline that not only this study but even multiple studies of tuberculosis treatment show that patients with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of failure during tuberculosis treatement.
Hope i have clarified your doubts.
Wish you all the best.
