Question: Hi, since i came back from overseas i had stomach pain and an upset stomach for several days but have since had it treated and has stopped. However, after that i have managed to have caught a cold, an now am experiancing the worst period pain i've had in years, my upper stomach is sore, and have had light brown watery period for the last few days. It has caused me such grief, i dont get the results of my vaginal swab for another 2 days. Im 24 and also recently just had my third Implanon inserted 3 weeks ago too. Thankyou.

Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. You seem to have acquired a stomach infection while travelling overseas. Since that is treated, you should not worry. The brownish spotting and bleeding instead of a proper period could be because of the recently inserted Implanon. IT takes a few weeks for the hormones to stabilize. Also, the menstrual cramping and pain could cause you to feel soreness in the upper abdominal area, though typically it occurs in the pelvic region. Right now, please take a hot water bottle to bed. Rest for a few hours. Take an antispasmodic such as Buscopan Forte twice a day. If the upper stomach pain persists in particular, please add an antacid too . Avoid eating outside, and stick to bland home made foods and soups. Ginger added to green tea will help to reduce menstrual pain. Also, I would have advised a patient coming to my clinic with such a picture to rule out any vaginal infection / urinary infection. I would perform an internal check up ( per vaginum and per speculum ) alongwith a vaginal swab for any suspicious discharge. If that is done, let me know the results of the swab as they come. Avoid sexual activity meanwhile. Have lots of liquids to avoid dehydration. Change underpants frequently. Just wash the private parts with warm lukewarm water. Avoid douching / cleansers / gels / soaps. Try and lie down as much as possible. PS - If you have been sexually active recently, just take a pregnancy test since you have not had a proper period. IT would rule out possibilities of a pregnancy / miscarriage / ectopic pregnancy. All the best. Please feel free to ask for further clarifications.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer it helped so much, i have since come up negative on the pregnancy test before and have rested up with heat pack sparingly also. My stomach still aches but at least bareable, hopefully my test results i recieve in 2 days are fine and this subsides if it is just the Implanon. Never had this experiance before and have used Implanon for 6 years now. Thank you once again, i shall let you know the outcome when i know more. Cheers.

Hello again, there was no problems in my swab test and i got progressively worse over the last couple of days i couldn't even make it to worse my cramps were so bad. They ran blood and urine tests for infection, pregnancy, full blood count and pancreas, all came back clear also. I finally passed my bowels after my 5th day of constipation and was very difficult and still had bad cramps since but am getting better. Think it both kept coming back to my overseas trip and change of diet whilst away since i eat so healthy and Implanon. I currently am feeling ok even though its been a long 2 weeks of vast stomach upsets and problems hopefully its coming to the end. Thank you for your time and effort i haven't had a detailed answer like i have before so i really appreciated your help and care considering i haven't had this problem before. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, all the very best and look forward to using your help in the future. Cheers.

Brief Answer: DETAILED BELOW Detailed Answer: Hello again. Good to hear from you again. The workup you mentioned pretty much covers everything that I had mentioned / could think of. The symptoms really sound like the remnants of the bad gastroenteritis you acquired as a souvenir from your trip ! Anyways, the worst is over, as you are getting better now. Consider taking probiotics daily - it will help you recover well, and will help towards stabilizing your traumatized digestive system. A daily whopping intake of yoghurt / curd ( better if you ferment it at home for a few days if possible ) will also help you a lot. Also, have lots of fluids daily ( try and make it atleast 4 - 5 litres per day ) - it will cleanse your system. Have a lot of soups ( with ginger, XXXXXXX ), broths, hot stew, buttermilk, lemon juice, green tea etc. Stick to simple, bland, home cooked meals - strictly avoid eating outside. Do not have leftovers / frozen foods / processed foods. Invest in cooking fresh and hot for a few days ( Salads too are a no - no till you are better ). Dairy products too are notorious for harbouring stomach bugs, unless they come from tried and tested sources ( making your own yoghurt at home in bulk, is a good example ). Try and limit your consumption of heavy proteins for a few days ( sheer meat cuts, steaks etc. ). Light on the tummy , high energy meals are preferable - cereals, yoghurt, fruits thoroughly washed and peeled . And thank you for the appreciation. It makes my day. Wish you too a load of cheer for the coming Festive Season, and I would be glad to assist you anytime in the future too, if you should trust me ! WIsh you good health always. Take care.
