Have Fishy Smell During Urination. Is It Diabetes?
Rule out infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi there
Thanks for your query.
The common causes of foul or unusual smelling urine can be: Urinary tract infections, certain foods (eg asparagus) and uncontrolled diabetes.
Do you have any associated symptoms? (as these will help us to make the right diagnosis.)
For example, if you have burning sensation when you pee or urgency this might indicate UTI. Excessive thirst or urination may mean Diabetes.
The simplest thing to do is to get a urine analysis by dipstick or in the lab.
If it is positive for pus cells/ nitrites or leucocyte esterase then UTI is possible.
If you have diabetes urine may show sugar or ketone positive.
Till you do the above keep yourself well hydrated.
Fell free to contact me if you have further questions.
Regards and best wishes.
HbA1c and blood sugar
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Thanks for the response.
HbA1c of 5.9 corresponds to blood sugar values between 90-125 mg/dl.
This value of A1c is borderline. This means that you do not have diabetes at present. However there is an increased risk of developing it in the future; especially if there is a positive family history or if you are overweight. So you need to repeat the test in a year or so.
You will benefit from lifestyle changes i.e., regular aerobic exercise, weight appropriate for your height, cutting back on high carb fast food.
Hope this helps
Good luck.
