Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such cracks and snaps are most probably caused by the air which has accumulated under the skin. If the air is under the skin, there is a huge possibility that there is some microscopic hole in the chest wall and the air is inside the chest as well. This is called pneumothorax. The air in the chest is urgent condition as it can compress the lung and result with shortness of breath. You should go to ER and have it verified with the chest X-ray.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

The left side of my rib cage is KILLING me, its been 8 months and I feel I hurt it when I carried something extremely heavy at work (I m a 21 yr old female) now it is sticking out, inflammation and I am constantly on pain meds just so I can function... What can I do? Should I be getting an MRI? I know nothing can be really done about broken/bruised/cracked ribs but may this be a more serious issue? Please help. Thank you.

Hi.. I had a surgery for my pneumothorax last year.

I have an apartment in the mountain around 800-1000m high above the sea level and i am planning to move there, i want to know if it is risky for me to live there to get another pneumothorax.

Thanks in advance

I am 57 years old and recently recovered from Bronchitis. I think I broke a few ribs coughing. Today I sneezed and something popped on my left side where I thought I had a broken rib. It hurt so bad that I ran to the local doc and he did a chest Xray. He showed me that there was an air bubble in that spot that hurt, but that didn t mean I didn t have any broken ribs, because the Xray in his office don t show the details in rib fractures unless they were really severe. He wanted to put me in the hospital, but I didn t go. I thought that maybe I could move around more and maybe loosen the bubble where it would move on. I am in extreme pain, but he gave me some pain meds for now. He mentioned some syndrome that he thought I might have because of the transition time of my bowels. I have a slight redundant bowel and was just diagnosed with Lympocitic (S) Colitis. I m going to see my gastroenterologist on Tuesday and will bring with me the Xrays I had taken today that show the air bubble. Do you think I made a mistake on waiting? I also have a low grade fever. Can an air bubble feel like a broken rib?? Thanks for any help, Patricia

Hi,

In December I had a pneumothorax in my right lung. The general surgeon who treated me in the hospital says I need to see a specialist for surgery. What kind of specialist would this be? She told me it would be day surgery so I am also wondering what kind of recovery I would be looking at. I work for an airline and fly quite often for my job. She has suggested I do not fly until after my surgery, but I am wondering how long after before I can fly again.
