Question: Hi
I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend, but am pretty sure that I didn't ejaculate inside her. But as we had it couple of times same time after washing my genital, am scared that will drops of semen with traces of sperm might lead to pregnancy. She took marvelon within 25hrs of un protected sex (marvelon 21 tab pack), 2tabs for 3 days as per pharmacist and she is planning to continue it for some more days. We had sex on 24th afternoon, and she took 1st two tablets on 25th 7oclock and continued till yestrday. when I checked with her, she is supposed have her period by 1st week of july. Can you please tell me the chance of getting pregnant and whether she needs to continue her medicines or not ?

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Marvelon is a combination oral contraceptive and its efficacy as an emergency contraceptive has not been established. Therefore, it is difficult to predict if she was protected. If she has regular 28-30 day cycles, she was probably in the fertile period when you had intercourse. I do not think taking the medication randomly would be of any use. Instead, she may wait for her period and if it does not occur, see a specialist for further treatment.

The ideal regime to take the medication would be from day one of the cycle. If taken mid-way, that cycle is not protected. You can go for a serum beta-hCG test after 4-5 days to confirm/exclude pregnancy. This is confirmative.

Hope I have clarified your query. Please feel free to contact if you need any more clarifications. I will be happy to help.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Even though ejaculation has not occurred, the pre-ejaculate contains enough sperms to cause pregnancy if it happens to be the ovulation time. In fact, a single sperm is enough. Since you did not wear any protection, the chances of risk are high, had she ovulated around that time.

Hope I have clarified your doubt. Please get back if you have any more queries. I will be ready to help.
