Got Braces. Why Are There Bruises All Over Mouth? Why Can't I Grind Food Well? What Is The Problem?

Question: Hello
I am 38 years and I just got (yesterday) braces to fill the gaps in my teeth. I had supernumerary teeth and my dentist removed it and put the braces. My problem is that there are bruises all over my mouth due to braces. And i cant even eat properly and there is slight open bite. When i bite, i feel like my upper teeth hit my braces not the lower teeth. I cant grind the food very well as i feel like hitting the braces. What could be my problem? My doctor says it will take 1 month to adjust to that biting habit. My question is, once fitted, can my dentist re-arrange my braces? What should i do to improve my biting and mouth bruises?

Please help!

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

The problems you have are very commonly encountered by most of people who get braces fixed.

The malocclusion due to the braces is temporary , as your dentist says it does take a month or so for the braces to be comfortable.

Yes, the dentist can rearrange the braces if needed.

To ensure that the braces are well fitted regular massage of the gums should be done.Massage could be done using the gum massager or with the tooth brush of soft consistency.

Also washing mouth with CHLORHEXIDINE solution daily before bed will prevent infections and thereby maintaining the gum health which is very essential for the braces.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you Doctor. I am indeed taking proper care of my braces and teeth.

My another problem is that my Dentist has put molar tubes on my molar teeth. Note that there is no band on the molars. Resulting he just cut the arch wire very closely and left it open. Now everytime i chew those open wires just poke into my inner chin causing several bruises and ulcers. I visited him today and he cut them short but still no respite. He says i should be habitual soon with this. Question is, how to deal with those open wires? He didnt even folded them and he says it will be like this only. Is there any way to correct this? My braces are Self Ligating XXXXXXX one.

Thanks XXXXXXX

Hi again,

Thanks for writing back.

The cut ends of the wires should either be blunted or folded. It would be XXXXXXX to leave a pointing open wire in there.

As the dentist says the odd feeling will diminish and you may not feel the wire after few days but the damage will continue to occur.Hence, do ask for it to be folded.

Hope I answered all your questions. Please use any answer clarification before closing and rating this answer. I will be happy to explain or expand on any issue you may have.
