Question: I've had pain in my right ear for two months now. It feels like it is plugged and I get intermittent sharp pains in it. I can't get it to pop, either. Could you tell me what this might be?

Hi

Thanks for the query

The symptoms of earache in both the ears could be due to the blockage of the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting nose and the ear).

During an attack of flu or nasal allergy, or presence of anatomical nasal block, there will be development of congestion around the nasal opening of the Eustachian tube. The congestion leads to blockage of the opening of the tube and thus causing negative pressure in the middle ear and pain.

Due to Eustachian tube block there will be collection of secretions in the middle ear giving rise to pain, fullness and sensation of water logged in the ear. This is what has happened in your situation, I doubt any infection at this stage.

My advice to you is:
1.     Drink plenty of warm water to keep the nose and the throat hydrated.
2.     Use steroid nasal spray to reduce the swelling around the Eustachian tube.
3.     Also, use saline nasal spray, followed by steam inhalation 2-3 times a day, this helps in reducing the nasal congestion, clearing of the mucus and reducing the earache.
4.     Avoid coffee/chilled beverages/alcohol/passive smoking.
5.     Try taking mucolytic (such as ambroxol or bromhexine) to reduce the viscosity of the mucus.

With the above measures your symptoms will definitely improve. If it does not improve within a week, please consult an apt ENT specialist for a complete examination and management.

Hope I have answered your query: I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Thank you, Dr. I greatly appreciate your help! My only other question is this: I am currently pregnant. Is nasal spray safe to take while pregnant?

Hi

Welcome back

I sincerely apologize for the delay in answering your question.

Saline nasal spray is absolutely safe in pregnancy, but the steroid nasal spray is not recommended during this period. It is recommended only when the nasal problem outweighs the risk of pregnancy.

Hope this answers your query; I wish you good health.

On Sat 9/17 I work up with a sinus bad headache,,, on Sun, my left ear felt like it was filling up and getting blocked, so I did an over the counter ear wax removal. The next day I had some mild ear pain and made an appt with my family Doc. He examined me and said I have a sinus infection. I had no mucus discharge, look in to nostrils and they were swollen. He checked ear, no ear wax and did not see and protrusion of ear indicating fluid build up! Only front top, under eye, back f head sinus pain and left ear stopped up with ear pain. The Doc gave me a script for flonase and amoxacillen. I was to take the flonase and after 2 or 3 days if it didn t seem to work, fill the script for the amox. The scrip was for flonase 1x in each nostril/day.(The Amox was 875mg 2x/day) I took the flonase and it seemed to relieve some of the pressure for about 8 hours but the pain was reallly bad. After taking it the 2nd day my face seemed like it was swollen (at night time 1.5days of flonase) and I filled the amox. Now my left side of my face is still swollen I do not have front sinus pain, but left eye is red and tearing constantly and does not shut tight completely. I have no prob with my right side. It is somewhat of a challenge to drink (left lips do not move as well. Can not alternate opening one with the other cloesd (back and forth). I can not raise my left eye brow. I do have full feeling in left side of face. I still have ear pain. I used to have tmj and I do have some now. I have ear pain below and behind my left ear lobe. I last took the flonase this morning about 7:30am. I started taking amox. last night (1st time) again this morning and I will take it again tonight. I have an appointment with my doc again tomorrow am. Thanks in advance. ...I am Diabetic controled well by diet. I have had 4 hear stents (3 proceedures . in 05,06, 08) bp is very well under control. I work out every day for approx 30 to 45 mins on treadmill and light weights. Have not had a fever or upset stomach of vomiting at all with this episode. Thanks in advance for your help..... D

I am a 22 year old female with chronic swollen lymph nodes only on my left side, which then leads to ear pain and jaw pain. I had my tonsils taken out a little over two years ago because of chronic tonsillitis. I had blood work and the only thing that came up was that my liver enzymes were really high, they were 250. I had tests done on my live and everything came back to normal. Could my liver an lymph nodes be linked?

Age 38, Female. 5' 7'', 130 lbs. Hello doctor, I am a chronic worrier and hypochondriac, and for the last couple months I am convinced I have throat cancer. Yes, I am a smoker and I tend to smoke more when I am nervous about stuff like this. Used to drink and party in my 20's but now I barely touch alcohol. It all started about 2 months ago, had this funny "ache" right below my left ear. Could barely feel it, but it was enough to make me start worrying. It's weird, but it almost seems worse when I have an empty stomach. (I also have acid reflux.) Just a couple days ago, I noticed the tonsil on the same side as the pain (left) has about 3 white dots on it, one looks kind of raised and inflamed. Then that little flap after the tonsil (right next to the uvula) has 2 tiny, tiny pimples on it, same color as the tonsil. I have no sore throat. The pain in now regular ear pain, like when I get my ear infections. I showed my throat to my Mom who is a nurse, and she said it's nothing, just infection. My tonsils are both about the same size. I talked to my Uncle who is a doctor, and he said I'm too young for throat cancer, that my voice would be hoarse if I did, and the whole thing sounds like a virus that settled in that general area. But I still don't believe anybody. Oh, and the more I get scared and concentrate on it, the pain gets INCREDIBLY worse in my ear...it starts stabbing and pinching. When I settle down and tell myself it's not cancer, the pain almost goes away. Tylenol also knocks the pain out for hours. (???) What do you think is going on? I DO still have the white dots on the tonsil and the 2 little raised bumps.... Thanks!!
