Sometimes when I'm eating solids (as opposed to things like yogurt, salads, etc.) I experience severe discomfort as the food goes down through my upper chest. (That's the only place I get the pain.)

If the liquids are going and solids are causing discomfort, you have to exclude oesophageal diseases like cancer.
Please go for investigations like Barium swallow,Upper GI endoscopy.
It can also be due to simple Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Till then ,please take Rabeprazole and Domperidone.
Take frequent small feeds.
Stop alcohol and smoking if you are taking them.
Avoid spicy foods, caffeine products and cooldrinks.
If you comeback with above investigations,I will clarify further.
Wish you good health
