Hi, I am a 69 year old male. I have had some essential tremor for 20 years for which I took beta blockers. These worked very well but eventually have given me erosive oral lichen planus from which I am only now slowly recovering.
I am a part time surgeon and need steady hands. I am looking for a non-pharmaceutical management strategy for this problem. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?

Hello Dr XXXXXXX and thanks for your query.

I am a Consulting Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist, and I would attempt to suggest you for the non-pharmaceutical means of reducing your essential tremor.

As you have already made up your mind not to use propranolol again, I would tell you something which I have referred for few of my patients of Parkinson's in the recent past.

Well, you must have heard of ayurveda. I use this form of therapy especially for chronic neurological patients with formidable benefits over time. And the best part of ayurveda is it is free of adverse effects. So, I am sure you will be better off on them.

Essential tremors have a name called Sarvaanga Kampam or simply meaning tremors all over the body. And a specific formulation of herbs called as -
Mahaa raasnaadi Kashayam is generally taken over stipulated period of time based on your clinical criteria.

Now, important here is you could get that at any Indian stores, but the quality makes the difference. I believe I can suggest you the oldest of the institutions in India WWW.WWWW.WW which has qualified ayurvedic physicians attending you. They also have telephonic consultation with prescription and shipping of their medicines overseas. Contact the main hospital at Kottakkal, Kerala.

Unani system of medicine (another herb chemical based therapy from Hyderabad, India) exists but it is not well researched.

Lastly, I would like to suggest you for the oral Lichen Planus too, with the help of turmeric (curcumin) based formulation of ayurveda which has been well researched by the University of Maryland, USA. (A double blind trial) So, you could get real help for both conditions from the consultation.

I could personally help you with referring you to a very XXXXXXX ayurvedic specialist in case you decide to try this. Just drop me a mail.

Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that you have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.
