What Would Cause Dull Radiating Pain From The Left Groin Area Up Into The Front Left Abdomen And Hip Which Worsens While Standing Up From A Seated Position?

Question: Dull pain in left groin area up into front of left hip and slightly into lower left stomach area. Worse after I sit for a while and try to stand up especially from leather or soft seating, not as bad from hard seats. Hard to stand up straight and walk right away. Pain is not always felt. Sleep fine at night even on left side. Only incident I can think of that contributes to condition was getting out of back seat of SUV through narrow door opening I twisted quickly to get out. Diagnosis? What can I do to improve the situation?
Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Groin strain or tendinitis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I understand your concern. In the absence of a physical examination, which would provide a doctor with an ideal insight into this condition, taking into consideration the location (groin area), the previous probable trauma, the description of the ache as "dull" and the pain intensifying upon greater effort (getting up from a cushy seat), I am of the opinion that the diagnosis is grade 1 groin strain, that is, inflammation or damage of a groin muscle. Pain in such grade 1 groin strains may not be present at the time of the trauma and only manifest later on as a dull ache or perceived upon exertion or abrupt movements.

Treatment is symptomatic and may involve anti inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen (if pain is not tolerated), cold patches a few times per day, elevating your left leg on a pillow while sleeping, and professional massage. I do no recommend stretching as this may delay the healing by irritating the damaged muscle fibers.

If these measures do not bring noticeable relief in a few days, I recommend you see a doctor for an in-person examination.

I hope this helps. You are welcome to ask any further questions.

Kind regards.

Thanks for the diagnosis.
If stretching is not recommended what exercises can I do?
I'm a very active person who participates in competitive sports such as baseball (hardball), basketball, tennis and ballroom dance . I assume I should avoid those until I feel the pain gone but what can i do to stay in shape and not lose my conditioning edge? Walking? skipping? slow jogging? Other?

Thank you,

Brief Answer:
Avoid any exertion

Detailed Answer:

I recommend you avoid any activity that demands the use or overuse of the groin muscles. Baseball, basketball, tennis and dance are not a good idea for now, but moderate walking should be fine. However, rest is the best, as it will allow the damaged muscle fibers to heal and regenerate.

I hope this help.

Wishing you good health and all the best.

I appreciate your quick responses. I'll follow your instructions and slowly work my way back to more rigorous activities by just light walking and more resting for now.

With the diagnosis of a grade 1 groin strain and following your guidance for light walking and rest, how long can I expect to allow the damaged muscle fibers to heal and regenerate in the groin area before moderate activity is OK?

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
A few weeks

Detailed Answer:

Grade 1 may take a few weeks to recover. So light activity until full recovery is the best way to go.

Kind regards.
