Dose Increase In The Dose Of Mirtazapine Cause Any Side Effects?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: I have been taking 30mg of Mirtazapine, but increased it to 45mg last Monday. Was doing well on 30mg. And also apparently do well on 45mg. But I mertabolise Mirtazapine very slowly according to a DNA that I had done recently. This time I feel worse on the higher dose. Also suffer anxiety. I am taking 6mg of Lexotan morning and night as well as 1/2 of a 7.5 mg immovane. I spoke to my physiatrist today who wants me to continue the 45mg of Mirtazapine. Not sure what to do

Brief Answer:
30 mg is a good enough dose

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
The usual doses of treating depression and anxiety with mirtazapine is 15mg-30mg. In certain cases when there is no response/less response to 30mg then the doses of 45 mg are used. Your psychiatrist might have increased the dosage as there would have been less than adequate response. If you are feeling worse then getting back to 30mg and then augmenting the mirtazapine treatment with other treatment options like escitalopram or venlafaxine should be a better option.
Also augmenting your mirtazapine with Cognitive behavioural therapy is also a good option for anxiety. This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness.
YOu may discuss these options with your psychiatrist and inform him before you make any changes to your medications.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
