Does Unprotected Oral Sex Cause Gonorrhea?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Hello. It appears that I contracted gonorrhea through unprotected oral sex with a woman (both of us performed it.) However, I had protected vaginal sex with her.

This happened on a Wednesday night. The following Sunday, I had unprotected sex with my wife.

Two days later (Tuesday) discharge symptoms began to appear. Can you tell me what the likelihood is that I transmitted it to my wife?

I am about to discuss it with her.

Brief Answer:
STD through oral sex is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had your vaginal sex with protection and had unprotected oral sex. Transmission of STD through oral sex with a girl is very much unlikely, also with giving oral sex to a girl.At the same time receiving oral sex with a man is more risky than these acts.

If at all your discharge is due to STD (Gonorrhea), it could be possible only if that girl has Gonococcal pharyngitis. Otherwise it would not be from your contact.
If the discharge is due to Gonorrhea, then the possibility of infecting your wife through your recent contact can not be ruled out.
Your investigation report would answer all your queries.

Thank you for your reply. I am still waiting for the test results to come back. My doctor belives that it is either gonorrhea or a yeast infection. The only indication for that is my wife suffered from one about 3 weeks ago and we regularly practice unprotected sex. I am hoping that is what it turns out to be.

In the interim, I have been given 250mg ceftriaxone IM and 1g azithromycin orally. In addition, I was given 150mg of fluconazole in case it is a yeast infection.

If it turns out that it is gonorrhea, I understand that the possibility of infecting my wife can not be ruled out but I am curious as to how infectious it is during that latent stage (particularly as I developed symptoms.)

Brief Answer:
Discharge is flowing out whereas yeast would not have such discharge.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

You had been given treatment for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and yeast infection. If the doctor is an expert, he would have assessed the possible diagnosis just with history, incubation period and with examination findings and would treat the exact cause. With Sot gun therapy failure rate is little high.
In yeast infection one can get white deposits over the glans penis and foreskin and redness and discomfort and never obvious urethral discharge whereas discharge is common with Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
So you have to know the difference between discharge (flowing), and the white deposits.
Anyhow wait till your results came or for the response to the treatment.
Get well soon.
