Does The Mole That Is Slight Asymmetry Indicative Of Melanoma?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Follow-up Mole Question.

I had asked a question about a mole a couple of days ago in terms of what to look out for, the ABCDE's.

I have regular skin checks but was just wondering about this mole (pics attached). This has been here for ages and unchanged but its not a pefectly round mole like some others. So what makes some moles more suspicious to a dermatologist than others? This mole hasnt been a concern for my dermatologist, yet according the the ABCDE's you would think maybe it would. Hope that makes sense.

Does this look normal to you? Some pics are with flash others without.

Thx

Brief Answer:
A normal nevus

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing back to us

I have reviewed the Images.

Features that usually suggest that a nevus is dysplastic are mainly:
Size> 5 mm, Blurred margins, Irregular shape/ Asymmetricity, Varying shades of color, Flat and Bumpy components. Three or more, out of these 5 features in a nevus would qualify it as Dysplastic nevus.

In my view it looks like a normal nevus. Slight asymmetry or not being perfectly round is nothing to worry. Moreover, it has not changed ever.

Hi, Thank you for your quick response. Im glad I got you again.

Thx for you answer. There is so much info on the internet it can be scary at times.

I have just one more question/mole to ask you about. I have also had this mole for a long time with no changes and has never been a concern when i have mu annual skin exam. I worry about it as its in an awkwad place, right on the crease of my groin and Its also a darker brown. It has no ABCD issues and is small. NewPics attatched as best i could take.

My question is does this look normal to you also? and should i be worried about it rubbing against underwear etc. Also is it normal for some moles to be darker.

Again, I really appriciate your time and help. Its great to have this resource and us easier to ask questions like this! :-) and also help put my mind at ease and know what i should be looking for in the future.

Brief Answer:
Benign nevus

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thank you

I have reviewed images of mole in groin.
This too looks benign. Well defined, round to oval, flat, small, uniform color.
Some moles can be darker as compared to others and there can be variations in size and shape of individual moles however as long as it is a well defined mole with uniform color and of same color intensity as it originally was there is nothing to worry. Any change in size, shape, color, surface of a mole Or if becomes raised Or a mole that looks significantly different than others should arouse suspicion (Ugly Duckling sign).
This mole rubbing against underwear is not a worry. Rubbing is not going to make it cancerous.

I know i said one last question but i forgot about this one. I have many sun spots on my hands, not sure the name the dermatologist used.

On my left hand it seems like i have a very tiny mole on a freckle type patch. Again been like this for ages i think and kind of have to look hard to see it.

Does it look okay? Is it just two moles or a tiny mole on top of something else? It really seems like a little tiny mole on top of a large freckle or something more than a different colored mole. I have lots of those freckle like patches on my hands. Pic attatched.

One again, thank you so much for your patience. Good to get little questions answerd!

Brief Answer:
A freckle against a background of photoageing

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I have reviewed the images.
This seems actually a freckle/ ephelis on a background of yellowish, sallow discoloration. This yellow, sallow discoloration is part of photoageing/photodamage.
Of course there are a lot of Seborrheic Keratosis Or age spots on back of your hand.

Thx. My email is YYYY@YYYY

You've helped me a lot. I also have this on my forearm (pic attached), been there for many years and never changed. My dermatologist has no concern either. Thanks to your advice i feel moe comfotable seeing that it looks ok (I think?) instead of spinning about it. As you get older your skin seems to get lots of blemishes :-(

Brief Answer:
Upload forearm picture again. I didnt recieve it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thank you so much.

I did nt recieve your forearm picture. Kindly upload again so that I can have a look at it.
Yes, people do get seborrheic keratosis (SK's) as they age, specially on sun exposed skin but SK's are benign and only a cosmetic concern.
SK's can be freezed with liquid nitrogen.
