Question: Dear Doctor,

I was diagnosed with 'Neurotic Health Anxiety with depression proness. No impression of suggestive psychosis' . I use to worry when touch blood of others, I will be concerned that, I don't touch my eyes or any mucous membrane in order to prevent contracting Hep C and HIV.

Few months back my doctor gave risdone 0.5 mg and I took it for few days. He told it is for anxiety and depression. Now I am not taking risdone. From internet I found, if I stop taking risdone, it might develop psychosis. Is it true that if one stops risdone 0.5 mg after taking for few days, he would develop psychosis? I am bit worried.Kindly help.

Best Regards,

Brief Answer:
No, It do not cause psychosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
I appreciate your efforts for medical consultation in so much distress.

Important aspects of your query are:
•     28 year old male
•     Known case of Anxiety and Depression
•     History of treatment with Rexipra, Risdone, Mophart & Aplaz
•     Currently not on any treatment.
•     Concern related to risperidon use and psychosis.

Risperidon is a antipsychotic medication. It is used for treatment of psychosis in doses range from 2 to 8 mg per day.

Some Psychiatrist use low dose risperidon (0.5 mg) along with other medications for better and rapid control of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Do not worry because of that, as it does not cause psychosis. Its stoppage also does not cause psychosis.

So, in my opinion continue treatment as advised by your current psychiatrist (as mentioned above treatment by you). Medicines take few weeks of time to show improvement. So, do not worry and relax. If you have any difficulty during the treatment process, discus with your psychiatrist, before changing or stopping treatment for better treatment outcome.

If you are XXXXXXX NCR, you can meet me for treatment in XXXXXXX

I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. In case of any doubt, I will be available for follow ups.

Wish you good health.
