Does Prolonged Premarin Intake Lead To Cancer?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: I am 72 years old. I had an intra-cerebral hemorrhage 13 years ago in the speech center. Made a very good recovery. Doctor thought is was caused by an aneurysm. I was taking 1/2 of green premarin ( I believe it is .625 every day. I felt the premarin helped me with speech, etc. Do you feel that amount of premarin will cause cancer? My e-mail address is: YYYY@YYYY . Please let me know your thoughts. Is there a small dose I can take? Thank you very much. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
Yes, it could cause cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based in your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Premarin Is used to reduce post menopausal symptoms. It improves overall symptoms, thereby it could have helped in speech. However, per se, it has no effect on speech.
2. You are using the lowest dosage.
3. You can continue with regular monthly breast examination with annual endometrial biopsy and breast examination.
4. Discontinuing should not cause much complications. The risk of cancer will be there for another 10-15 years even after complete stopping of premarin.

Risk of cancer present. Discontinuing now won't be helpful in relation to cancer.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX H Muddegowda,

Thank you for your answer. My first e-mail included an error. I told you that I am taking .625 Premarin; however, that amount is .3 Premarin taking 1/2 tablet of that dose each day. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Side effects minimal

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking again.

Its good to know you are at lower than lowest dosage. Its effect will be minimal, but still present. Similarly, complications/side effects will also be minimal.

Detoxing this dose won't serve much purpose due to its complications being present for longer time.

My opinion would be - you can continue. Annual and self check ups are important.

Hope it helps.
