Question: I have peripheral neuropathy and have recently been having loss of anal control when I do heavier lifting or straining. Is there a connection or could it be another problem?

Brief Answer:
could be same problem

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Peripheral neuropathy can also affect the nerves controlling the anal sphincter, so it could be extension of the same problem.

Has the cause of peripheral neuropathy been determined? Or is it unknown?

Even though it might be same problem, I would recommend an ano-rectal examination by a doctor, to check the contraction status of the sphincter. It also rules out other causes like tumor.

Hope this helps.

No cause has been determined for the neuropathy. My diagnosis was made about 10 years ago.
Are there exercises that can be done to strengthen the anal sphincter?

Brief Answer:
yes there are exercises to strengthen

Detailed Answer:
Sphincter contraction and pelvic floor exercises are there to improve this problem. Your physiotherapy team can guide you through.

As the cause of neuropathy is unknown, there won't be any specific treatment.
