Brief Answer:
It is an antibiotic which cannot make any difference to IBS-symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am assuming you know by now how to differentiate between a stomach infection caused due to eating contaminated food or drink; and the diarrhoea caused due to IBS.

If so, then the medication prescribed to you by the pharmacist will not do you any good. It is an antibiotic which can be used to treat stomach infections, but will hardly make any difference if at all your symptoms are brought about by IBS-aggravation.

There is no harm in taking the medication, but as it is an antibiotic and will not help with suppressing IBS in any possible way. So here are a couple of questions for you:

1. Are your symptoms manageable or are they bad? Can you describe your symptoms to me in detail? (By the way I am also an IBS-suferrer, so I can relate better)

2. Do you remember the medication you used to take back home when your IBS used to get aggravated? If so, what is the name?

3. Would you want me to give you a few names of medications that you wish to try to get from the pharmacy in France?

4. How long has it been since you have been taking nifuroxazide? Or have you not taken it yet?

I look forward to hearing from you in order to help you better.

Best wishes.
