Question: This question is for an UROLOGIST:
I am a 42 year old male, single. Recently i was doing some research on prostate health on google. Due to my high triglycerides, I use Fish Oil supplement which has (2400 mg with 1200 mg of Omega 3--1 tablet daily). To my greatest XXXXXXX , i found out with some recent studies in internet, that use of Fish OIL supplement has been linked to risk of prostate cancer.
I was further reading that Vitamin E also causes prostate cancer. I do take a multivitamin that has Vitamin E (d alphatocopheryl succinate with 12IU , 40 % daily value---2 tablets daily) Please advice if these 2 supplements and the % I consume, put me into risk of prostate cancer? I have no family history of prostate cancer but enlarge prostate due to age of older males in family

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Fish oil and vitamin E supplements are safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern.

Your knowledge of prostate cancer incidence, is through the internet.
I'm happy of your interest in incidence and epidemiology of prostate cancer.

Many people don't read these articles completely, or comprehensively.
All cardiologists are clear, about use of fish oil and vitamin supplements.
In no case, do they increase incidence of prostate cancer.
In fact omega-3 fatty acids, are beneficial in high triglyceride people also.
It has a protective effect, in people with high triglycerides.
Exercise, diet, and lowering alcohol intake are very important.

You've nothing to worry at all.
A family history of prostate cancer, does co-relate with a higher incidence.

So you may continue with your vitamins and fish oil supplements.
Hope you're re-assured and be relaxed now.

Wish you good health.

Thank You Sir. I have one more question. As I am 42 male and single and live a descent life style with no ladies affair at moment....Sir i was also reading that for single men it is essential to ejaculate sperm or in other words to masturbate atleast 3 times a week so protein does not build up in testicals which may also lead to prosate cancer. So i was also wondering that whether it is a must to follow this process being a single guy.If so what is a safe number of masturbation per week? I know this is a very stupid question but Sir , I just want to be safe than sorry.

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Masturbation is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

XXXX, as mentioned earlier, you're doing a service to yourself, asking questions.
No question is stupid. After all, you're not a doctor.

Not masturbating, doesn't lead to prostate cancer.
Neither is there any safe frequency of masturbation.

One can masturbate daily, or as and when, you feel like doing it.
It doesn't harm health in any way, neither linked to any cancer.

Have protective sexual life with a lady, if engaging in it.
Having sex is a normal lifestyle, and good if, you're committed to the relation.

Hope your doubts are cleared.
Feel free to ask any question you feel like.

Wish you well.

Brief Answer:
Daily supplements are not indicated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Earlier reply had already cleared this query.
No article has conclusively proved this doubt.
What you should understand is that, you don't need these supplements daily.

If you send your lipid profile report,i can suggest simple tablets to curb triglycerides.
Exercise regularly and watch your diet, eating fatty and fried foods infrequently.

Wish you good health.
