Does Hysterectomies Cause Kidney Cancer?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: A month ago I had a total hysterectomy, tubes, ovaries and cervix removed due to early cancer (stage1a, grade 1). They tell me I will be ok now. But I had a kidney removed last July due to renal cancer. Now I read on line that hysterectomies make you more likely to develop kidney cancer? There is a lot of info on it and they all seem to say the same thing. I only have one kidney now and sure don't want anything to happen to it. Have you heard of this theory or study and is it true? I am a bit nervous about this. I am being tested for Lynch syndrome which would mean a high risk for colon cancer but I never expected having a total hysterectomy would make me more likely to get kidney cancer again. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you I did not have cervical cancer...it was endometrial. I am scheduled for checkups every 6 months. I just hate this fear of possible developing another cancer. With both cancers they were sure they had it all and I am just going for regular checkups. I was specifically asking about the link between the hysterectomy and kidney cancer....thank you

Brief Answer: Benefits more than risk Detailed Answer: Hello, You had the hysterectomy due to grade 1 cervical cancer. If you didnt, the the cancer would easily progress to advanced stage. In any advanced stage disease, spread of cancer to other organs increases. There may be a possibility, that late stahe cervical cancer can cause metastasis in other organs like the kidney. And vice versa. But there is a higher possibility of spread to the kidneys if the cervical cancer was allowed to progress. In short, either way is a no win situation. Usually if stage 1 cervical cancer is operated, and lymph nodes are negative, then it doesnt require management. But it would be wise that you followed up every 6 months with a ct scan and pap smear. Further more, you have already had kidney cancer, other kidney being affected due to any mets from that is also a possibility. Just do regular follolw ups ad advised. Im sure any major complications can be identified early. As i mentioned, risk of mtastasis to other organs is always a possibility. It occurs due to lymphatic channels. Normally in advanced stage cancer. With any cancer, there is a possobility of mets to another organ. Its something which needs to be monitored. Its been seen that some organs pass mets to specific organs like the kidney, in your case. And vice versa. Its a risk. Not a surety. Early stage disease doesnt cause metastasis if treated in time. In my opinion, just follow up as advised.
