Question: Does hypothyroidism cause GERD or acid reflux or vice-versa?
thyroid test shows small abnormalty. The test a day ago was better than 3 weeks ago when I was prescribed Ammoxicillian/Penicillan 875mg for ear infection, strep throat, and enlarged lymph nodes on my neck. The doctor said he suspected hyperthyroidism as well based on blood work then. I have also been taking Famotidine for the acid reflux. It sometimes feels like my heart is racing, but EKG and pulse rate were normal when tested. Blood Pressure Medication was increased slightly from 10/20 Amlodopine Benzapril to 10/40.Suppose to go back to doctor in 3 weeks for check up.

Brief Answer:
GERD and Hypothyroidism are not mutually related.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your concern.

Neither Hypothyroidism nor GERD are causative of other.

Many thyroid disorders arise de novo.

Repeat tests if needed.

So what do you think caused this abnormality? How concerned should I be waiting 3 weeks before another blood test. Could my other symptoms have caused this abnormality? How common is this?

Brief Answer:
These disorders are common in general population.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your concern.

Thyroid disorders are sporadic .

They can arise with no preceding cause.

GERD can arise from lax esophageal sphincter.

This can also result from Environmental and food disturbances.

You can wait for 3 weeks as of now,for next report.

Other symptoms do not contribute for these abnormalities.

These disorders are very common in general population.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.
