Does Grapefruit Interact With Lipitor And Crestor?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Nov 2017
Question: Before I moved here I had a different doctor. He had me on Lipitor and advised me to also take CO Q10. I was also told to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit products.
Now I have moved and after my 1st new doctor here lost all of my records I changed doctors. I am now taking Crestor and would like to find out if I should be taking CO Q10 with it and avoiding grapefruit products.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome back on HCM!

I passed carefully through your concern and would like to explain that as you are actually taking Crestor it is not necessary to avoid grapefruit products.

Grapefruit has been shown to increase the blood level and effect of Lipitor by decreasing its metabolism (inhibiting the responsible hepatic enzyme), but such an affect has not been demonstrated in case of Crestor.

So you may safely consume grapefruit while on Crestor therapy.

Regarding CO Q10, which in fact is a natural component of the human cells (part of the energy producing cascade inside mitochondria), as both Lipitor and Crestor decrease its levels (in fact almost all the statins exert this similar profile) it is advisable to use it concomitantly in order to avoid any possible underlying adverse effects.

So, I would recommend continuing CO Q10 supplements.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
