Does Exercise Induces Asthma Cause PFT Changes On Exertion?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 Sep 2016
Question: this is for Specialist Pulmonologist Dr Bhavsar

I am having issues sending you a question

I am waiting for an account to open up but I need to ask a question so this is not one off my account unlimited.

I used the day yesterday to go on a couple 1 mile walks. Each time I I noticed a hard time breathing

So after the walk I considered a thought from the walk. How does a pft test make adjustments for active and being inactive. I take the test when inactive but when I'm active I breathe harder so how does it correct it

Brief Answer:
Exercise induced asthma needs PFT on exertion.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
I think you are asking about PFT changes on exercise. Am I right?
Exercise induced asthma can cause normal PFT at rest and abnormal PFT on exertion.
So if you really think about abnormality then get done PFT on exertion.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Well not really, But may have to think about your answer. I was saying that when you take a pft test, it is reporting results that you have as you are sitting, but does it make adjustments for when you are exerting yourself such as walking or exercising or any type of exertion that requires use of physical energy.

Ok I may be confused so I will try this a new way.

If i go take a pft test, when I get there, I sit in the test area and take the test. I am doing this in a relaxed and quiet area. I get my results and they say normal .
These are results for when I am doing nothing.

When I go out exercising or go to do a bit of exertion such as going up or down the stairs and carry boxes, I start to exert my self. I am sure the test will report different results.

Are there parameters built into the test such as when I take it relaxed, does the test know that this is a relaxed state of being and will change when I exert so that my outcome is understood

How does the test know that i am normal now, but later the results will be different when I exert and maybe my exertion may have lung problems then but not when I am relaxed.

Brief Answer:
No such facility in PFT machine.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Now I get your point.
No, PFT machine take you as patient. It can not differentiate in resting, relaxing state and exertion state.
Predicted Values will remain same. Predicted values are based on height, weight, ethnicity, sex, smoking status etc. These values are not based on status of patient (relaxed or exertion).
So if you are having COPD then it will definitely reflect in PFT even in resting state.
Hope I have cleared your point.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

My stress is a number of different things.
Number #1 stressor is the job and the pressure and sense of self worth that i get from it. The value of my performance is my own fault letting things slide from my normal level of dilligence to a very low. and that is from lack of interest because I want to leave. The project is so problematic and time consuming that i do less on my other functions. It has a serious deadline date and that even consumes my thinking.
Number 2 is the family life here. I include the current wife and her kids.
Number 3 is trying to find a job and getting no luck.
number 4 is the wish to get home.
Intermixed in this is my health that all drs and tests say i am fine but I feel lousy and let the stress get to me.
My mind still wants to know if I need a ct to verify the lung status. but i talk my self out of it.
Oh i bruised my ribs on my side a few weeks ago and they are taking forever to heel so when i breath in my left side is careful to let me know that a deep breath or attempt and it will send a pain sensation

I want to say yes it would but I can not be sure. I might just look for another test or something because I still have an issue that would nag at me.

My biggest worry is a repeat of what happend 16 years ago.
I went to the Dr complaining about my chest pain, the dr ran general office tests and listened to my heart and such and said its only stress. A few days later the stress bothered me that it sent me to emergency room at hospital and there they found a blockage. That blockage should have had a bypass but my body did a bypass on its own,(collateral circulation) so they let if be. I have been fine since but it took a visit to er to find that. I am afraid to let things go so long to then find out later.

Does that make sense.

Brief Answer:
There no such possibility in lungs.

Sorry to say but there is no such possibility in lungs, possibility of collateral circulation.
And if you are having lung disease then it should definitely reflect in your PFT.
What about previous thread?
Have you closed it?

Closed,
What happens if I do not close it.

Why is there no possibliity of it with lungs. Does the pft have more data that informs.

THe pft will reflect lung disease. Why is it that i ignore Bronchitis but I have emphysema on the mind.

This is the reason why I insist so much in closing by you. I insist you only when you say that HCM closed the last conversation or thread .
I will never tell you directly to close the thread. Ha ha ha.
Hope this is clear to you.
I don't know why you are more thinking of emphysema and not bronchitis.
Actually both are included under one roof, COPD.
But now a days no one use terms, bronchitis and emphysema. All use term COPD.
So I don't know why you think more of emphysema.
