Does Excessive Stress Cause Gall Stones?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Jun 2015
Question: My daughter aged 44 has just had a bad gall stones attack. Confirmed today by ultrasound. I am wondering about the connection between stress and gall stones? She has been nauseous for a few weeks and has been suffering severe depression for a few months while being unable to nurse for the past 18 months because of a work injury to her back. Her medication has included Valium, endone, slow release pain tablets, sleeping tablets and anti depressants. (I can't remember drug names). Hope you are able to help me with my query? My email is. Brief Answer:
Yes stress is one of important factor for gall stones.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. There are few research studies which confirm that stress is one of important aggravating factor in gallstones. Chronic stress results in inhibition of emptying of gall bladder and thus increase the formation of gallstones. One another theory is that chronic stress results in increase in stress hormone cortisol, which results in increased cholesterol formation and also increase the risk of gall stone formation.

As she has history of depression and is on drug therapy, so her chronic stress is one of important cause for her gall stones.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Please dont hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care
