Does Synthyroid Cause Low BP And Increased Heart Rate?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I am writing on behalf of my mother. She has had Hypothyroidism for 56 yrs now (she is 72 yrs old). She has been on Synthroid (0.1mg) for quite a while but lately she has been experiencing low blood pressure and high pulse rate. I was just wondering if the medication, given her age, is having an adverse effect on her blood pressure. She just measured 97/53 with a pulse of 84. She is 5'6 with 131lbs.

Brief Answer:
need thyroid profile report

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic .

It is difficult to comment on this without the recent T3 T4 ad Tsh levels.

It is unlikely that synthyroid cause low bp and increased heart rate.

The only possibility is if there is overdose or decreased clearance of synthyroid then that may cause increase in thyroid hormone levels and affect blood pressure and pulse .

So I suggest you to get thyroid profile done and get back to me. If you have already done then send me the values. Depending on that value it can be decided whether this is due to synthyroid side effect or not and whether dose needs to be adjusted .

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Regards
