Does Suprax Help In Treating Gonorrhea?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 May 2016
Question: Good Morning. I just realized that I could ask a specialist so I am asking a question that has already been answered; however, I was not comfortable with the answer.

I had unprotected sex on a Saturday night. 2 1/2 days later, I had no symptoms; however, I took 2 grams of azithromycin in case I contracted chlamydia. I thought it would cover Gonorrhea as well. After reading, I realized that it would not. The day I took the Z pack, I started to experience pain when urinating and redness at the tip of my penis. No discharge. 9 days post unprotected sex, I was in Canada on vacation and was prescribed two pills of Suprax. I believe it was 800 ml, but it may have been 400. I took both pills. It has been exactly 7 days since I took the Suprax. The urinating pain has subsided for the most part, but I am still experiencing some minor inflammation still.

My question is?

1. Will the Suprax be enough to cure the Gonorrhea despite there being reports of resistant strains of Gonorrhea? Even if it was 400ml. I had the sex in Florida.

2. Can I still experience some inflammation at day 7 even though I am no longer contagious?

3. Is seven days enough time to be comfortable having sex?

4. Can I get tested at day 7 to confirm that I am cured. Should I even bother?

Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
get urine culture,

I have gone through your query and being your physician I completely understand your health concerns.
do you have any discharge from the urethra right now?

1: As far as treatment is concerned, generally it is recommended for US that single shot of CEFTRIAXONE 250 MG in muscle and followed by azithromycin 500mg. usually it is sufficient for it. this is dual therapy and highly effective. Suprax do covers gonorrhea but not a first line drug.

2: if there is no discharge from urethra then you should not be worried. you should not be contagious at seven day if effective treatment has been taken. In your case , i do not think you are contagious since you had taken sufficient antibiotics.

3: Yes, seven days are okay for having sex.

4: if you are really concerned, urine culture is a good test to proceed with but make sure that you are off the antibiotics for last 48 hours before going for this test.

thank you doctor. I know ceftriaxone is the first line of defense which made me nervous that the suprax was not sufficient. Even though it is not the first line of defense, will it cure my. There was no discharge at any point, including now. I only have a very slight itch feeling near the tip of my penis inside. Basically feels like if your penis rubbed against something. I forgot to mention that after the unprotected sex act, I wiped my penis with an anitibacterial/anti-fungal wipe. I wonder if this could have caused some sort of contact dermititis?

In my opinion , if there is no discharge then you should not be worried about it. as far as coverage of ceftriaxone and cefixime < suprax > is concerned, it is almost same. You had taken the recommended dose. it would be sufficient for it. YES, indeed suprax is sufficient, no need to worry about.
In contact dermatitis , penis should be red. if it is not red then no need to worry at all.
just stay calm and consume more water. you will be fine.

should I be worried about trichomoniasis? I see that is the most common std. Would the 2 grams of Azithromycin or the Suprax be sufficient in curing it?

Brief Answer:
use metronidazole for it

Detailed Answer:
Welcome at HCM
I appreciate your follow up...
As far as trichomoniasis is concerned , metronidazole or tinidazole is the drug of choice for it. Its not about the dose of axithromycin or suprax. They are not good at covering it.
Hope it helps
