Does Qvar Cause Severe Anxiety And Insomnia?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Sep 2016
Question: Can upping qvar dosage from 40 mcg 1 time per day to 160 mcg (daily- 2 x 80 mcg) cause agitation, anxiety and severe insomnia in a 14 year old male? This has been 1 year at this higher dosage and his problems coincided with increase in med. His last pulmonary test was excellent. Will talk to doc to titrate down dosage.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms could be because of the cumulative effects of qvar

Detailed Answer:

Dear xxxxxx,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

Inhaled steroids(qvar) are used for control of asthma and at times very high doses of steroids have to be given for control of symptoms.

Inhaled steroids are preferred over oral steroids as they contain very less quantity of drug as compared to oral formulations. However if taken over a very long period of time they may also have side effects and since your son is on increased dose of qvar for over 1 year, the symptoms mentioned by you could be because of the cumulative effects of qvar.

I suggest if his symptoms are well controlled you should start reducing the inhaled steroids gradually. For this consult his physician/pulmonologist who can guide you properly.

Take care.
