Does Lisinopril Cause Excess Mucus In Throat?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: I am taking lisinopril for high blood pressure. I am suffering from excess mucus or phlegm at the back of my throat which never seems to clear. Could this medication be the cause of it. I have had the problem before taking lisinopril but it is much worse. Doctors don't seem to be concerned about the mucus and difficulty in swallowing.

Brief Answer:
It could be related to this medication but symptoms suggestive of sinusitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this mucus and swallowing difficulties that you have reported. Lisinopril is know to cause chronic cough. This is often unproductive and not associated with mucus. If you have mucus, then it may not exactly fit the picture of cough related to lisinopril.

To make a clear distinction between these symptoms, A complete physical examination and testing would be required. Mucus at the back of the throat and cough is often associated with sinusitis. Proper investigations to rule this out would be warranted.

I will like that you bring this to the attention of your doctors as a major problem and ask that you would like it addressed. They may not have taken you serious when you mention it to them.

I hope this helps in the process of obtaining answers to this. I wish you well and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
