Posted on Mon, 12 Jun 2017
Question: My husband is taking Hydroxyurea because of platelets too high. He is at a boy scout outing and has been notified that a scout there was infectious with mono. Could he be more likely infected while he is on this medication?

Brief Answer:
Susceptibility to infections possible while on hudroxyurea

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I understand your concern. In 10% of people taking hydroxyurea, the decreased number of platelets is accompanied by a decrease in the number of leukocytes, the blood cells responsible for the immunity.
To be on the safe side, it is best that your husband stay away from sources of infectivity.

I hope this helps.
If you have further questions I'd be happy to answer them.
Wishing you all the best.
