Does Gabapin Help Relieve Pain Due To Postherpetic Neuralgia?

Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: My father is 76 years old. He had undergone a bye pass heart surgery about 18 years ago. 4 months ago he got infected by herpes shingles on his back, both side of spine. Now there are no blisters in his skin. However he is suffering with pain. This pain is consistent. Doc. has suggested Gamapin (Gamapentilin) 100 mg 3 times a day and sensivol (nortiprytiline)25 mg 2 times a day. I am told the pain is due to post herpetic nuerolgia.
I am also told these medicine will help him not feel pain.
Is there any medication which can repair his damaged nerves due to herpes?
Looking at his age and heart condition, can dosage of gamapin be increased?

Brief Answer:
He may switch to pregabalin

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). He is definitely suffering from post herpetic neuralgia which can last for months specially on old age individuals.

He is on a subtherapeutic dise of gabapentin which can be given 300mg once daily to even thrice daily depending on response. I would rather suggest Pregabalin+methylcobalamin (Nova M 75) twice daily for him. He can discontinue gabapentin. Pregabalin is a better alternative with less side effects.

He may continue with nortriptyline as before.

Regards

Thank You Doctor.
Doc had increased dosage of gamapin 300 mg twice daily after my father expereinced acute pain. With this his pain reduced significantly. However two dayes after increase the dosage, my father felt very week, losing senses (chakkar aana). His body just gave up couple of times when visiting toilet.
His cardiologist says, it is due to increase of dosage of Gabapin.
What is your take on this?
Will XXXXXXX M 75 can give pain relief similar to Gapapin 300 mg , 2 times a day?

Brief Answer:
gabapentin causes drowiness

Detailed Answer:
Hu.

Yes gabapentin causes drowsiness as a side effect. Pregabalin is as effective as gabapentin and causes much less drowsiness. It is to be taken twice daily.
