Question: Can Gerd cause horseness or cancer in the esophagile ? I have had five cervical neck surgies the last being four and a half months ago. What type of tests and exam should I have and by what type of doctor. Please help me, XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Hi
GERD can lead to oesophagitis as the acid can reflux back into the lower end of the oesophagus damaging the normal lining of the food pipe. If this happens over years just imaging the entire mucosa is denuded and there is repairing leading to scarring. There is a condition called Barret's oesophagus which happens to be precursor of the oesophageal cancer. However all this can be arrested and treated if there is a good follow up and participation from your side.

Upper GI endoscopy is done to look for the changes that I mentioned above. The Gastroenterologist is the doctor to meet.
